Virginia brought her mother, Ida, into our store recently to find a new walker that would “fit” better. As it turns out, Ida had the correct size walker, but she was not using it correctly. Our staff gave her instructions, had her practice the instructions, and sent her happily on her way.

There are many options for senior living, and it can be confusing to know which choice is best for you or a loved one.

It used to be that senior family members either had family come to their home to care for them, they went to live with a child in their home, or they went to a nursing home. Nursing homes still carry somewhat of a stigma, although they have come a long way and no longer warrant that negative connotation.

In North America, it is estimated that 50-60 percent of the population is affected by winter depression. This means about half of the people you know are depressed in the wintertime! Winter depression is also called Seasonal Affective Disorder and symptoms include mild depression, lack of motivation and low energy.

The current population of elderly American’s grew up in an age when depression was not understood to be a biological disorder and medical illness. They worry they will be labeled “crazy” or that being depressed is seen as a weakness of their character. They think someone can “just get over it” or just “snap out of it”.

Depression is not a passing mood and recognizing depression in the elderly is not always easy.

In a study that included about 200 adults over the age of 65, it appears that “older adults that use computers seem to report fewer depressive symptoms, regardless of how many hours they use the computer,” write the researchers. These adults were randomly drawn from three different zip codes in lower Manhattan and filled questionnaires about computer use, mental health, and tasks of daily living.

You cant escape the staggering statistics in America about how unhealthy we are. This diagram gives it to us in plain color and its pretty alarming. People here in Colorado are able to run, walk and bike most places.

Admitting you should be more healthy can be the first step to breaking that twinkie and soda pop habit.

Approximately 2.4 million people die in the U.S. each year. Natural causes is not in the top 10 causes of death, so we can assume that most people needed medical care which probably includes medical supplies in some form or fashion.

So what do you do with left over medical supplies?

If you have unused medications, you cant return them, even if they are in their unopened, original packaging. Ask your local hospice if they can help you to destroy them, or provide you with instructions on how to destroy medications safely.
